FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

What is a short haul move?
This is a move that is less than 450 miles. Make sure to inquire with your moving company as you may have to pay long distance charges even for short haul moves.

What is a local move?
This usually refers to moves that are less than 100 miles and within the same state.

What is an intrastate move?
This refers to a move of more than 100 miles within the same state.

Why is the cost for traveling higher for moving trucks?
The costs of driving time are normally higher because moving trucks can’t travel at the same speed as regular vehicles on highways. They also can’t access any non-truck routes which results in longer mileage.

How should I pack breakable items such as glass, crystal or china?
Make sure you choose a container that has a sturdy lid and room for lots of cushioning. Place a 2-3 inch layer of crushed paper on the bottom of the box and then wrap each item individually with a soft material for protective padding. Pack the heaviest items first followed by lighter ones and use crushed paper to fill in any empty spaces in the box. After sealing the box with tape, mark it “FRAGILE” and list the contents.

Can I leave my clothing in dresser or chest drawers?
You can leave lightweight clothing such as blouses, lingerie, shirts and sweaters in drawers. However, don’t leave heavy items such as sheets, table linens or books in drawers because they damage the furniture. Also remove any valuable or fragile items before the move.

What are additional services?
These include services such as appliance servicing, stair carries or shuttle service that you request or are required. They will result in additional charges.

What is long carry?
You may be charged an additional fee if the moving van can’t come within a certain distance from the entrance of your destination. This is generally 75 feet, but you need to check with your particular moving company. ?

Should I store items that won’t fit in my new home?
You can choose to store items that won’t fit. However, if you have items that are old or have little value, you may be better to sell or donate them instead of paying the high cost of storing them for a long period.

How should I move any hazardous items?
We recommend that you dispose of any hazardous items such as paint, propane tanks and aerosols. Professional movers can’t move combustible or hazardous items because of the potential for fires or explosions.

How are fees calculated for interstate moves?
Your moving company may charge you a set fee which depends on the inventory of your items and delivery timeframe. They may also charge you based on the weight or volume of your items.

What is valuation?
This refers to the degree of value of your shipment. A valuation charge compensates movers for assuming a greater degree of liability than the base transportation charges.

What should I do if one of my items is damaged during the move?
Professional movers and packers do their best to ensure all your belongings arrive safely to your destination. However, damage sometimes occurs. In this case, please email or call your moving company as soon as possible with the details.
